We are excited to announce Katie Davis of Katie Davis Design as our featured designer spotlight for May!

(We took a break from blog posts after a busy season of tremendous growth and the new showroom (coming soon) + new shop transition. It’s good to be back, and we picked one of our favorites to jump back in with.)

Just down the road from Dallas, Katie is based out of Houston, Texas and we have been lucky to work with her from our earliest projects years ago. She has such a clean + interesting, yet traditional aesthetic that mixes vintage and new pieces seamlessly in her designs. We should mention that she is as delightful to work with, as her images are beautiful to look at. It was hard to pick images for this feature, as Katie is always using CEH pieces in beautiful designs + customized finishes that are perfectly eclectic and really highlight the beauty of each (very different) piece. I think we lost count of all the pretty projects she has pieces in. We enjoy seeing the finishes, and materials and colors Katie chooses for her items, they are always just right for the piece and space (not an easy task).

Check out just a few of Katie’s projects below! Be sure to follow her on Instagram, as this is definitely not a comprehensive collection of the CEH + Katie Davis. We can’t wait to see how she uses the pieces being crafted now at the CEH for her clients’ homes.

Your design services are open to clients in which cities or areas? : Anywhere is OK with me as long as we can work together Via FaceTime and you can measure.

How would you describe your design style?: A Southern Contemporary design aesthetic. I am always mixing in old with new for a layered, eclectic look.

Why did you choose to use CEH pieces in your projects?: LOVE The CEH! They offer the perfect blend of old and new for my clients, I love sourcing a more traditional vintage piece painted in a fun color for some and I equally love that I can source new custom piece with a nod to the Dorothy Draper style.

What other professions or jobs did you have prior to interior design ? I was an Attorney for almost 10 years

Where do you save and splurge in a home? I splurge on lighting. I warn all my clients from the beginning that I love lighting and how much it can add to a space. I will save on non-custom couch/furnishings to make sure that those lamps are the statement of the room :)

What is your favorite flower? Love a Hydrangea, always

Other interior designers that you admire (and why)? Oh gosh so many! That is why I love this business, I love seeing the creative work of others and how they pieced together a design for the space. I am pretty much obsessed with the work of Amy Berry, Emily Butler, and Meg Lonergan. They each have the amazing ability to pattern play and make the room come together with life. I love mixing patterns in my own work, but these ladies are masters.

What is your signature outfit? Ha! I am in my “winter uniform” - grey sweater, black leggings and booties recently :) Not so much a signature but more of an easy go to.

What is your favorite candle and scent? Obsessed with Capri Blue Volcano candles

What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of your job as an interior designer? When someone tells me that their home/space that I worked in is their favorite place. I love designing a space that families hang out, share love in, share stories in, play in, and laugh in.
When it comes to decorating “rules”: Is there such a thing and if so, is there one you constantly break? Mixing metals, if that is even a rule anymore... I am constantly breaking that one :)

What does your dream house look like, and where would it be? Something on water...

How does your personal style with fashion differ or reflect your choice in interior styles? I am much more traditional. I love the Southern classics, a good rattan chair makes my heart flutter.

Any tips on designing and decorating a home with kids and pets? Performance fabrics and stain treat your rugs. Other than that, it is life... it is ok if you get a little mess on the couch, it is what makes it a home and creates the memories. I tell my clients that we aren’t bubble-wrapping the furniture, but we do our best to give you a level of protection against life.

What mistakes do you think a lot of individuals make when decorating their own homes? Thinking of the individual pieces rather than the room as a whole or forgetting the layers that finish off the space. It is so hard to spend the money on accessories after the couch and custom pillows.. but it is the pretty coffee table books, bowls, candles, and small accent pieces that finish the space off and bring it home.

Favorite era for design and why? Right now. I love the mix of tying in pieces from the Mid-Century Era to the 1980s wallpaper craze. It is such a fun time to be designing in, there is a little bit for everyone out there.

What are your favorite books on design? I love Paloma Contreras’s new book!

Best design (or life) advice you were ever given? “It is 25% Design and 75% business” - Emily Butler (NYC).
